Hybar is building a second CMT rolling mill in Osceola

Hybar is expanding its Osceola site with a second CMT-550 rolling mill. The new plant will be installed alongside the existing CMT-550 and is expected to increase annual reinforcing steel production by around 630,000 tonnes.

According to SMS, this will create the world’s first dual-CMT operation. The plant design is tailored to operate two CMT rolling mills at a single site, whilst making more efficient use of shared logistics and energy infrastructure.

For Hybar, the expansion represents a significant increase in production capacity for reinforcing steel. At the same time, the site continues to rely on a plant concept that closely integrates steel production, casting and rolling.

CMT process combines steelmaking, casting and rolling

SMS is supplying the complete CMT rolling mill as a turnkey solution. CMT stands for Continuous Minimill Technology. The process integrates the entire journey from scrap to high-quality end product in a single, continuous flow.

This involves the process-level integration of steelmaking, continuous casting and rolling. Digital monitoring and automation are designed to support reliable and highly productive operation. According to SMS, the concept is designed to minimise the carbon footprint as well as operating and capital costs.

The new plant complements the existing CMT-550 rolling mill at the site. The dual-plant concept is intended to make better use of shared infrastructure, particularly logistics and energy infrastructure.

Energy supply via solar farm and battery storage

The Osceola site is supported by a 105 MW solar farm and a 160 MWh battery storage system. This energy infrastructure forms part of the plant concept and is intended to supply electricity to the twin-plant facility.

SMS has set a clear target for the project: CO₂ emissions are to be reduced by up to 35 per cent compared with a conventional mini-steelworks. This figure describes the plant’s targeted reduction potential and should not be interpreted as an operational value that has already been achieved.

With its second CMT-550 rolling mill, Hybar is focusing on a combination of compact steel production, integrated process control and site-specific energy infrastructure. The project is significant for the steel industry because it combines production expansion, automation and CO₂-focused plant design.
