The Chinese company Rizhao Steel has installed anti-bulging technology on all five of its Arvedi ESP high-speed casting lines. This upgrade from Primetals has enhanced the Rizhao plant – the world’s largest Arvedi ESP complex with an annual capacity of over 11 million tonnes – enabling more precise control of bulging during slab casting – a crucial factor for the high-speed process of Arvedi ESP technology.
In addition to mould level control, the system also ensures dynamic, hydraulic and position-controlled adjustment of the roller gap in the bender. This allows the volume of molten steel in the upper section of the casting line to be actively regulated. The real-time control continuously compensates for mould level fluctuations caused by bulging. This increases average casting speeds, improves surface quality by reducing oscillation marks, and minimises the inclusion of casting powder. At the same time, the risk of breakthroughs and molten steel overflow is significantly reduced.
A stable mould level is essential for the smooth operation of any casting plant, but particularly for high-speed plants with high mass throughput such as the Arvedi ESP, as Primetals emphasises.
