Steel producer installs battery storage system

ArcelorMittal and EDF Power Solutions Germany have signed a contract for a 25 MW battery storage system in Bremen. This flexible solution helps to stabilise the electricity grid and reduces energy costs. 

ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s largest steel producers, and EDF Power Solutions Germany, a leading provider of battery storage solutions, have signed a contract for the operation of a large-scale battery storage facility at ArcelorMittal’s Bremen site. The planned storage facility has a capacity of 25 MW and 50 MWh. A battery of this size could supply a small household with an annual consumption of 2,500 kWh for around 20 years – without a single recharge.

Greater efficiency, fewer peak loads

The battery storage system will play a central role in the plant’s load management in future. It helps to specifically smooth out electricity demand during periods of high grid load. This reduces the strain on the electricity grid whilst simultaneously lowering the company’s energy costs. As plant operations cannot simply be shut down whilst production is underway, the battery storage system provides additional flexibility: it charges and discharges automatically within defined time slots, thereby preventing peak loads. Furthermore, the storage system is used flexibly on the electricity market to generate revenue from electricity sales and reduce procurement costs. Under a 10-year service contract, EDF power solutions Deutschland is responsible for all stages, from technical design and installation through to servicing and maintenance.

Contribution to the energy transition

“The battery storage facility at the Bremen site will be one of the largest in northern Germany. As the plant can draw electricity round the clock, the storage facility makes a significant contribution to grid stability. In this way, we are making an active contribution to climate protection. Furthermore, the project represents another step towards reducing CO₂ emissions even further in the future,” explains Rainer Böse, CEO of ArcelorMittal Germany.
