Sidersa is building a mini-steelworks for long products
The Sidersa plant will be the first newly built mini-steelworks in Argentina in 50 years. The Danieli mini-mill will be installed in San Nicolás de los Arroyos in the province of Buenos Aires.
Sidersa’s new mini-steelworks is set to produce 360,000 tonnes of high-quality bar steel products in bundles and wire rod annually, processing local scrap into new products intended primarily for local construction applications and export.
The plant will be the first Mida QLP-Due mini-mill in Latin America, according to plant manufacturer Danieli. The plant will be equipped with technologies patented by Danieli, such as the Digimelter (continuous scrap feeding, Q-One Power Feeder and Q-Melt process control suite), Digirefiner (LF with Q-One Power Feeder), a single-strand Octocaster and a rolling mill for the production of wire rod and straight bars, which are finished in a direct rolling bundle station.
The continuous feeding system enables the scrap to be preheated, thereby reducing the energy required for melting and minimising carbon and NOx emissions; this, together with the elimination of the need to reheat the billets, ensures environmentally friendly steel production. Q-One is hybrid-capable from the ground up, optimises the furnace’s performance and enables the direct use of renewable energy with a negligible impact on the electricity grid.
The Danieli Octocaster enables fast, high-quality production and continuous casting/rolling for maximum production efficiency, minimal energy consumption and minimal emissions.The single-strand Octocaster supplies 154 mm octagonal continuous billets to a 20-stand open-hearth bar mill and a wire rod line equipped with an 8-high fast-finishing block.
The direct rolling bundle station enables high-speed feeding of the bars into the cooling bed within a compact, optimised space. In-line quenching ensures the quality of the rolled end products. Danieli will also supply ancillary equipment such as flue gas and water treatment plants, as well as the process and auxiliary cranes for the entire plant. The new mini-steelworks will be operated using process control systems from Danieli Automation.
