SAIL to build India’s largest blast furnace

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has awarded Danieli Corus the contract for the new Mega Blast Furnace No. 6 at its IISCO steelworks in Burnpur. IISCO’s Blast Furnace No. 6 will be the largest on the Indian subcontinent.

The new blast furnace will have a working volume of 4,680 m³ and an internal volume of 5,557 m³, and is expected to increase the current production capacity of the IISCO steelworks by 4.08 million tonnes per year. According to Danieli Corus, the unit will be equipped with state-of-the-art blast furnace ironmaking technology. The hot blast system is based on cupola-fired hot blast stoves, which represent Danieli Corus’s sixth reference for this design. The gas cleaning system features a dry secondary stage based on Danieli Corus’s Pleno V technology, which originated in the primary aluminium industry, where it has proven itself to be robust and high-performing for almost 50 years, according to the company.
