Practical ways to decarbonise the steel industry
ABP Induction and H-Iron presented new solutions at the European Green Steel Summit 2026 in Düsseldorf.
The transformation of the steel industry towards climate-friendly production is one of the greatest challenges of the coming decades. Consequently, there was considerable interest in the 4th European Green Steel Summit 2026 in Düsseldorf, where leading steel producers, technology providers, energy companies and industry experts exchanged views on strategies and solutions for decarbonisation.
ABP Induction saw the event as an important opportunity to contribute its own expertise in the fields of electrification and energy-efficient process solutions to the international technical discourse. The company was represented by Dr Marco Rische, Director of System Business, who, together with partner company H-Iron GmbH, had prepared a technical presentation entitled “From Carbon Challenge to Carbon Opportunity: A Practical Path to Decarbonised Steel” – and delivered it on stage.
The presentation focused on the question of how the steel industry can achieve its ambitious climate targets without losing sight of its economic competitiveness. This is because, despite numerous political initiatives and technological developments, it is evident in practice that many decarbonisation projects are being held back by high investment costs, lengthy approval processes or a lack of infrastructure.
In his presentation, Rische made it clear that the transformation will not be achieved through a single technology. Rather, a combination of different solutions is required to sustainably reduce emissions along the entire value chain of steel production. ##A key focus of the presentation was on combining H-Iron’s methane pyrolysis technology with ABP Induction’s electrification solutions. The technology developed by H-Iron enables the production of hydrogen from methane, producing solid carbon instead of CO₂. This can then be reused as a valuable resource. This approach is complemented by ABP’s inductive heating technologies, which can replace fossil fuels in various thermal processes.
Using specific examples of applications, Rische demonstrated how inductive technologies can already be used today in melting, heating and heat treatment processes, thereby making an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions. The key message was: decarbonisation does not have to wait for the perfect solution of the future. Technologies already available today could help companies to gradually reduce emissions whilst ensuring their production processes remain cost-effective.
