Danieli has recognised Jindal Steel Sohar for the record output achieved by its steelworks in Oman. The plant operates a 220-tonne electric arc furnace (EAF).
The Jindal Steel plant in Sohar recently set a monthly record of 235,112 tonnes of liquid steel with its EAF, supplied by Danieli in 2014, which corresponds to an annual production of over 2.5 million tonnes of steel.
According to Danieli, the production record is attributable to the recent upgrade of the EAF with the adaptive process control system Q-MELT. The process control system optimises furnace operation, thereby enabling plant availability of 96.5 per cent.
The furnace is operated using 61 per cent hot direct reduced iron (DRI), 37 per cent cold DRI and 2 per cent hot briquetted iron. It thus achieves a productivity of 324 tonnes per hour and an electricity consumption of 493 kWh per tonne.
