Tata Steel to upgrade acid regeneration plant in Port Talbot

Tata Steel has commissioned Andritz to supply an acid regeneration plant for the steelworks in Port Talbot, Wales, UK. The new plant will meet the highest environmental standards and support the planned capacity expansion of the steelworks’ pickling line.

The plant will be capable of regenerating up to 6,340 l/h of pickling solution to enable maximum reuse in the pickling process and minimise waste. The system will efficiently support both the current pickling capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per year and the future capacity of 1.8 million tonnes. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
Paul Boxer, project manager at Tata Steel, said: “The new plant will enable us to reduce the import of large quantities of acid and the export of pickling solution in future. This is a major step towards decarbonising our pickling process.” ##Amdritz’s latest flue gas cleaning technology ensures emission levels well below the statutory limits. The integrated ECOmode function will enable significant energy savings, particularly following the capacity expansion, thereby further supporting Tata Steel’s efficiency and sustainability targets.
Advanced process control, a high degree of automation and modern cyber-security features will ensure stable, safe and continuous plant operation. ##Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2027.
